Morphology
Symmetry and Form
Monad, radial_symmetry, isopolar 3- (2- or 4-) colporate, elliptic in equatorial_view, circular to (sub)circular in polar_view
Dimensions
Polar_Axis = 22-29 µm; Equatorial_Axis = 20-26 µm
Apertures
Three colpora, a few 2- or 4- colporate grains, colpus elliptic, colpal apex acute, aperture_membrane psilate, distance between the adjacent colpal apices 8.0-10.0 µm, margo undifferentiated, costae_colpi present; Os: wide with uneven or irregular lateral ends, equatorially elongated tending to be synorate [See Fig. 3 in Muller, J. & Caratini, C. (1977) for variation in shape and fusion of endoapertures (os; pl. ora) in Rhizophora pollen], oral_costae present
Exine
Scabrate or granular (granule diameter = ±0.5 µm), tectate, infratectum columellate, exine thickness: at poles ±2.0 µm; at the mid-point of the intercolpium ±2.0 µm
Remark
6 species of Rhizophora based on SEM & TEM observations have been divided into 3 groups (Muller, J. & Caratini, C. 1977)
Tentative Pollen Typification
Rhizophora type (See Muller, J. Caratini, C. 1977)
