Morphology
Symmetry and Form
Monad, radial_symmetry, isopolar, 3-colporate, elliptic ( E > P ) in equatorial_view, triangular (angulaperturate) in polar_view
Dimensions
Polar_Axis = 19-40 µm; Equatorial_Axis = 28-51 µm
Apertures
Three colpora; Colpus: short (±1.0x6-7 µm), and narrowly elliptic, much shorter than P axis (brevicolpus) colpus apex acute, distance between the adjacent colpal apices 20-35 µm, margo distinct (±2.0µm wide), aperture_membrane psilate or feebly verrucate(?), costae_colpi absent; Os: elliptic, lalongate, distinct costae (2-3 µm wide) with endocracks in the equatorial_zone
Exine
Densely verrucate, tectate, infratectum columellate, verruca (0.5x0.5 µm), exine thickness at the mid-point of the intercolpium 1.8-2.0 µm
Remark
A eurypalynous genus. Pollen morphology may be instrumental in subdividing the genus (or-if considered appropriate - in referring the different species to a number of genera now usally regarded as sections etc. under Symplocas) [see Erdtman, G. (1952): p. 425]. Pollen grains of 85 species of Indo-pacific "Symplocos": Symplocos type (2 subtypes) and Hopea type (8 subtypes) in Meijden, R. vand der (1970)
Tentative Pollen Typification
Symplocos "folisoa" type
