Description

The manuscript is composed of a text containing 142 palm leaves. The text is almost complete; only the first leaf is missing and the second is damaged. The text, entitled Māṭṭu vākaṭam, deals with veterinary specific to cows (māṭṭu).

The diseases affecting cows which are documented concern :

Diseases caused by anthrax infection (aṭaippāṉ) : piraḷi aṭaippāṉ, īral muṭṭi aṭaippāṉ, ūtaṭaippāṉ, caṅkaṭaippāṉ, eru aṭaippāṉ, caṅku nīrattaṭaippāṉ, kural aṭaippāṉ, nāḻi aṭaippāṉ, vāy aṭaippāṉ, nākka aṭaippāṉ, pal aṭaippāṉ, mūkka aṭaippāṉ, kāta aṭaippāṉ, neñca aṭaippāṉ, vayiṟu aṭaippāṉ, perumala aṭaippāṉ, kala aṭaippāṉ, pula aṭaippāṉ,veḷḷīral aṭaippāṉ, vaṟata aṭaippāṉ, kāṟṟa aṭaippāṉ, utiri aṭaippāṉ, muṭṭa aṭaippāṉ, muṉa aṭaippāṉ, piṉa aṭaippāṉ, muṉpiṉa aṭaippāṉ, kaṇ aṭaippāṉ, and enta aṭaippāṉ;

Viral infection : uḷḷutiri nōy, ūṭum kallurutiri, pullutiri, muṭaṅku pullutiri and aṭapputiri;

Burning : muṉ eripaṉ and kāl eripāṉ;

Ulcers (cilanti) : utiri cilanti, toppuḷ cilanti, kurutu cilanti and kutirai cilanti;

Skin diseases (kuru) : talai maṇṭai kuru and ūti kuru;

Diseases caused by vāta imbalance : pakka vātam, timir vātam and eṟumpāṭai vātam;

The text provides therapeutics to treat these diseases, among them, the use of thermal cautery (cūṭṭukōl aṭikka viparam). It invokes also the positive influences from stars (naṭcatira palaṉ) on cows’ health.

142 ஓலைகளை கொண்ட ஒரு நூலை உடையது இந்த சுவடி.இந்நூல் கிட்ட தட்ட ஒரு முழுமையான நூலாகும்.முதல் ஓலை காணப்படவில்லை, இரண்டாம் ஓலை சேதம் அடைந்து உள்ளது.இந்நூல் மாட்டு மருத்துவத்தை பற்றியதாகும்.

மாட்டு வாகடம் என்ற தலைப்புடைய இந்த நூல் விலங்குகளுக்கு மருத்துவம் குறிப்பாக மாடுகளுக்கு பற்றி கூறுகிறது.அவை பின்வருமாறு :

Extent and Format of Original Material

Size of the manuscript : 30,0cm x 4,0cm. The palm leaves of the text are numbered in Tamil and Arab from 2 to 143. There are some mistakes in the Arab numbering. The palm leaf 84 is double. The manuscript is in excellent condition.

The manuscript contains 143 palm leaves of 12-14 lines per leaf. It has no wooden boards.
